TODAY

If you’ve already walked the historic district in Apalach, here’s a wider look at the stretch of coast that surrounds it β€” the kind of places that still feel quiet on a weekend.

Inside this issue: a simple day on the beaches and towns, a couple of local notes, this weekend’s happenings, and the weather.

THE FEATURE

πŸ–οΈ One easy day on the Forgotten Coast: beaches, towns, and quiet water

The Forgotten Coast still has long stretches of sand and small towns that haven’t been built up. You can cover a good slice of it without a rigid plan.

3 PRACTICAL WAYS TO MAKE IT WORK:

  1. Start at St. George Island State Park. The eastern end of the island has wide, uncrowded beach, dunes, and short trails. It’s an easy place to walk, shell, or just sit. Bring water and shade β€” amenities are limited.

  2. Stop in Port St. Joe or Carrabelle. Both are small and walkable. Port St. Joe has the Constitution Convention Museum and a relocated lighthouse; Carrabelle has its own lighthouse and the World’s Smallest Police Station. Either works as a short break between beach time.

  3. Keep the water simple. St. Joseph Bay is calm enough for kayaking or paddleboarding if you want it. Otherwise, a short pier stop or a look from the shore is enough. Most of the appeal is the open water and the lack of crowds.

Good to know:

  • Parking fills earlier at St. George Island State Park on nice weekends.

  • Bring your own water and snacks β€” many of the quieter beaches have few services.

  • Locals still call the whole stretch the Forgotten Coast.
